KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) overwhelming victory in the Johor state election has reaffirmed Umno’s dominance in what has long been regarded as its political heartland, with analysts describing the outcome as the result of strong leadership, meticulous preparation, close ties with the Johor palace and a divided opposition.

Election analyst Dr G. Manimaran said Johor remains unique because of Umno’s long-standing relationship with the royal institution.

“So, I think in this election, Umno used very well the relationship, the advantage.”

“That’s why they dissolved the assembly on 1st June, the same time, we celebrate the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday,” he said while speaking to Scoop.

He said the timing reflected the confidence of the state leadership and helped translate public loyalty towards the monarchy into electoral support.

“They will translate the people’s loyalty towards the institution and vote for the party, vote for the coalition. So, we can’t deny that,” he added.

Manimaran said the coalition had spent almost two years preparing for the election.

“I think they already prepared for more than one and a half years or two years. They are very well equipped to face this election,” he explained further.

He contrasted BN’s preparations with Pakatan Harapan (PH), which he said was focused on governing rather than preparing for the state polls, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) became distracted by internal disputes.

“They only talk, talk, talk, but they never prepare for state election,” he added.

Political analyst Dr Azmi Hassan agreed that BN’s relationship with the Johor palace played a significant role in strengthening voter confidence.

“I think that’s one of the big reasons why voters have confidence in Barisan National, because Barisan National demonstrate that they have a good, cordial relationship with the Istana.”

He added that Johor voters were ultimately looking for stability.

“Well, the key lesson from the Johor result is that do not belittle the voters.”

“I think the voters in Johor has demonstrated that they want a very stable and capable government,” he said while speaking to Scoop.

Beyond Johor’s unique political landscape, analysts said BN’s victory was built long before the official campaign period, with years of groundwork proving decisive.

Political analyst Dr Mazlan Ali similarly attributed BN’s success to its disciplined campaign and formidable grassroots machinery.

“Johor State has been a traditional stronghold of Umno since independence, despite the change in the political landscape where Umno lost in the 2018 general election,” he said while speaking to Scoop.

He added that Johor’s political culture and institutions had accelerated Umno’s return to dominance.

“BN’s victory last Saturday proved that a good strategy and the hard work of the party machinery can bring a big victory to Umno and BN,” he said.

Political analyst Dr Awang said the scale of BN’s victory underscored Johor’s return as Umno’s strongest political fortress.

“It is a landslide victory and an almost complete political dominance by BN,” he said, adding that winning 49 out of 56 seats was far more than a comfortable majority.

According to Awang, the result also represented a strong endorsement of Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s administration, with voters rewarding the state’s emphasis on stability, continuity and development.

The outcome is now expected to shape BN’s strategy heading into the Negeri Sembilan state election, with Johor serving as a potential campaign blueprint.

Moreover, Mazlan said BN would likely attempt to replicate the formula that delivered its landslide victory.

“I think BN will try to repeat its strategy in Johor to face the NS elections. Cooperation with PAS is an option and BN needs to maintain momentum in NS to ensure BN is once again dominant in Malaysian politics,” he explained futher.

Awang also believes the result strengthens Umno’s position at the national level.

“Umno can now point to Johor as proof that the party is still capable of securing a decisive victory,” he said
