KUALA LUMPUR – Seri Menanti candidate Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharuddin said that he would rather fulfil 50 out of 100 requests than make unrealistic campaign promises he cannot keep, insisting voters deserve honesty and achievable results from their elected representatives.
Speaking to Scoop, the Bersatu candidate said he would not make commitments that are beyond the state’s resources or practical limitations.
“The most important thing is that I will not promise people everything. I will work towards whatever is realistically possible. For example, I will not promise to build a stadium if it is not feasible, but I will work hard to secure whatever facilities and assistance we can obtain,” he said.
Megat said his focus would be on delivering tangible outcomes rather than making headline-grabbing pledges.
“If there are 100 requests and we manage to fulfil 50 of them, that is already a good achievement. I will not simply promise everything. I will make every effort and work as hard as I can on behalf of the people.”
The 43-year-old president of the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) said many politicians lose public trust by overpromising during election campaigns but failing to deliver once elected.
“What I do not want is to promise 100 per cent and then only deliver two projects. That is not the way I want to work. I would rather be honest with the people from the beginning.”
Drawing on his experience in sports administration, Megat said success comes from setting realistic targets and working systematically towards them.
“In sports, you cannot simply promise gold medals without proper preparation. Politics is similar. You must assess the available resources, understand the people’s needs and focus on what can realistically be achieved.”
He said voters in Seri Menanti should judge him based on his efforts and track record rather than campaign rhetoric.
“I want the people to see the effort and the work. If we receive 100 requests, we will work on all of them, but I will not pretend every single one can be completed immediately. What matters is that we genuinely strive to solve as many problems as possible.”
Megat is contesting the Seri Menanti seat in the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1, which will determine the composition of the state’s 36-member legislative assembly.
Nomination was held on July 18, while early voting is scheduled for July 28. – July 21, 2026
