KUALA LUMPUR — The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has signed a letter of acceptance (LOA) with MBDA France for the procurement of a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 in the United Kingdom on Monday.
In a Facebook post, Mindef stated that the document was signed by its secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and MBDA France to enhance the weapons capability of the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).
“The procurement forms an important complementary contract for the LCS project, ensuring the vessels are equipped with air defence capabilities that meet the RMN’s operational requirements.
“The signing of the LOA reflects the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the country’s strategic maritime defence capabilities to address current geopolitical challenges,” the ministry said.
Launched in 2011, the multi-billion Ringgit LCS project represents the Royal Malaysian Navy’s flagship modernization drive to construct multi-role combat vessels designed to protect the nation’s maritime sovereignty.
Although the program was severely delayed for years due to governance issues, cost overruns, and technical adjustments, revised government restructuring has since set the lead vessel, KD Maharaja Lela, on track for sea trials and commissioning.
Integrating MBDA France’s SAM capabilities fulfills a vital operational requirement for these ships, equipping the fleet with specialized air defense to intercept incoming aerial threats, including drones, enemy aircraft, and anti-ship missiles.
This contract also follows a major procurement setback involving the fleet’s surface-to-surface armaments, where Norway’s revocation of export licenses forced Malaysia to abandon its deal for the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) system.
By finalizing the agreement with MBDA France, Mindef moves to secure key defensive capabilities and ensure the LCS fleet enters service properly armed against modern geopolitical challenges. – July 23, 2026
