KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has assured civil servants that they will be protected from political pressure, urging them to remain focused on their duties and not be drawn into partisan disputes amid heightened political tensions.
Speaking at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry’s monthly assembly, Zahid said he was aware that several government officers had allegedly been questioned over their attendance at ministry programmes held in states that recently went through elections.
Without naming those responsible, he claimed the pressure was being exerted by individuals holding senior positions.
“I know some of you here have been summoned and are probably facing pressure because of the political conflict.
“Continue serving and carry out the responsibilities entrusted to you in accordance with the proper regulations and legal procedures.
“I will protect you. I am professional in this matter. I want everything to follow the correct rules and legal procedures,” Zahid said.
He reminded civil servants that while they should understand the country’s political landscape and the rationale behind government policies, they must remain politically neutral and refrain from participating in partisan activities.
Zahid stressed that professionalism within the civil service was essential, saying there must be a clear distinction between politics and public administration to ensure government responsibilities continue to be carried out with integrity and in the best interests of the people.
“Government affairs cannot come to a halt simply because political temperatures are rising,” he said.
Referring to the political developments following the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, Zahid acknowledged that some civil servants might be concerned about the stability of the unity government and the direction of the federal administration.
However, he maintained that state-level political contests would not affect the functioning of the federal government as long as Parliament had not been dissolved.
“The unity government was formed based on a clear understanding and agreement that it will remain in place until Parliament is dissolved.
“As long as there is no dissolution, the federal government will continue to function, the administration will proceed, and every responsibility entrusted to us by the people will be carried out as usual,” he said. – August 6, 2026
