KUALA LUMPUR — PKR’s decision to grant Nurul Izzah Anwar temporary leave from her post as deputy president will not affect the party’s operations or functions, as its organisational work will continue as usual, said PKR Information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
Vice-president Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will temporarily take on the responsibilities and functions of the post, Fahmi told a press conference after launching the Kuala Lumpur-level Safe Internet PIBG Convention 2026 here today, Bernama reports.
Fahmi said the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) rejected Nurul Izzah’s resignation and instead granted her leave to focus on personal matters and pursue her PhD studies.
“Nurul Izzah remains a party member and will continue to contribute to the party’s struggle,” Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said
On speculation that Subang MP Wong Chen would vacate the parliamentary seat, Fahmi said he had no information on such a matter.
Any vacancy by an MP was subject to an official announcement by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, he added.
Fahmi also addressed speculation that the next general election (GE) could be held earlier, saying there were no such plans at present, and that the government expected to hold GE by the end of next year at the latest, when the current Parliament completes a full-five year term.
He said the Federal Government’s focus at present was on ensuring the smooth running of the administration, while appreciating the commitment of the component parties in the Unity Government to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership until the end of the term.
Fahmi said the overall commitment within Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the Unity Government was to continue efforts to improve the country’s situation and implement the reform agenda needed by the people.
He said among the matters that still required attention was the implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the Lembaga Tabung Haji for the 2014 to 2020 period.
He also hinted that the Prime Minister would make several announcements soon, which he said would be good for the people and the country. — August 8, 2026
