KUALA LUMPUR — DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to immediately accelerate several long-awaited institutional reforms, including the separation of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor roles and a two-term limit for the prime minister.
Gobind said the decision by DAP delegates at the party’s National Conference yesterday to remain in the Federal Government sent a clear message that the party’s core reform agenda must now be implemented without further delay.
“While the party has voted to remain in the Federal Government, urgent and concrete steps must now be taken to implement our core agenda, specifically institutional and economic reforms,” he said in a statement today.
He urged the Prime Minister to set clear and firm timelines for the implementation of foundational institutional reforms.
Among the priorities, he said, were expediting bills to separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to two terms, and amending the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (SOSMA) and Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
Gobind, who is also Digital Minister, said the groundwork for the reforms had already been laid, with both the Attorney General-Public Prosecutor separation bill and the two-term prime minister proposal prepared.
He also pointed out that a ministerial statement on proposed SOSMA amendments had been tabled in Parliament as early as February last year, while amendments to the PAA had been under discussion for months.
“We must finalise and table them without any further delays,” he said.
Gobind said the government’s decision to convene a special parliamentary sitting to debate the Royal Commission of Inquiry report on Tabung Haji showed that Parliament could be used to expedite matters of national importance.
“A similar route ought to be taken for these crucial reform bills, or additional sitting days must be added to the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session specifically dedicated to these,” he said.
He stressed that DAP remained committed to ensuring the reforms were implemented, adding that the bills should be passed before the end of this year.
“DAP remains fully committed to ensuring that these reforms are carried through without further delay. We should look towards getting these bills passed before the end of this year,” he said. – August 17, 2026
