KUALA LUMPUR – Industrial hubs and urban centers across the Klang Valley are taking the heaviest hit as a thick, suffocating haze envelops 41 regions throughout the peninsula.
Data from the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) shows Selangor anchoring the crisis, dominated by an alarming reading of 187 in Johan Setia.
High concentrations of pollutants continue to choke neighboring districts, including Shah Alam (175), Petaling Jaya (169), Klang (167), Banting (166), and Kuala Selangor (164).
The capital and surrounding administrative centers offer no relief:
Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya: Cheras leads the city’s toxic air spikes at 179, followed closely by Putrajaya (176) and Batu Muda (172).
Negeri Sembilan: Hazardous air continues to blanket Nilai (177), Seremban (175), and Port Dickson (160).
The pollution belt stretches heavily across northern and southern corridors:
Penang & Perak: Minden (166), Seri Manjung (166), Balik Pulau (164), and Tanjung Malim (164) remain trapped in unhealthy zones.
Melaka, Johor & East Coast: Air quality has deteriorated in Bukit Rambai (164), Temerloh (163), Tangkak (159), Sungai Petani (157), and Tanah Merah (152).
East Malaysia has largely escaped the worst of the crisis, with 22 nationwide locations maintaining moderate readings—including Kuching (73) and Tawau (79).
Under the national scale, API readings between 101 and 200 signal unhealthy conditions that present serious health risks to vulnerable populations, while levels above 200 mark a plunge into very unhealthy territory. – September 16, 2026
