KUALA LUMPUR – Resentment over a rejected romantic advance and jealousy over a best friend led to the horrific murder of 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal at a secondary school in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, last Saturday.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad revealed today that investigators have seized the murder weapon—a 96-centimeter iron rod wrapped with a blue necktie at one end to serve as a makeshift handle.
“Police believe the murder may have stemmed from the suspect’s resentment towards the victim, including over his rejected romantic advances and her relationship with his best friend,” Ab Rahaman told a press conference, adding that the motive remains under active examination.
Classmate arrested: Crime scene shows desperate struggle
The sole suspect, a 16-year-old classmate with no prior school disciplinary record, is currently in custody.
When Irene Sofiya’s body was discovered unconscious and covered in blood inside the school hall at around 5.50 pm on Oct 3, the scene pointed to a violent struggle.
Overturned tables and chairs, alongside a shattered flower pot, indicated the victim fought desperately for her life.
A post-mortem examination revealed fatal blows to the head, along with severe defensive wounds across her body, hands, and other parts, though police confirmed there was no evidence of attempted sexual assault or that the broken flower pot was used as a weapon.
Key evidence sent for chemical analysis
A forensic sweep conducted between Oct 4 and Oct 8 yielded crucial physical evidence now submitted to the Chemistry Department. In addition to the 96-cm tie-wrapped iron rod, officers recovered blood-stained clothing including a white-and-red sports jersey bearing the number 27, black tracksuit pants, a Mizuno jersey, black trousers, and Adidas slippers.
Investigators also secured an iPhone 13 Pro, an Owala drinking bottle, spectacles, a Yamaha key, a pink Casio calculator, three student attendance sheets, a Dahua Technology decoder set, and a backpack containing an Additional Mathematics textbook and an SPM exam paper bearing Irene’s name.
Prosecution decision imminent
Investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder are nearly complete. Police expect to submit the investigation papers to the Johor Prosecution Director’s Office today for formal charging instructions.
The suspect’s initial six-day remand order, which began Oct 4, has been extended for another six days starting tomorrow. Any assessment regarding the teenager’s mental condition will be left to the court if he is formally charged and ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation. – October 9, 2026
