KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim reminded Malaysians not to misuse social media to insult, humiliate or incite hatred against others, stressing that freedom of expression must come with responsibility.
His Majesty said some people had forgotten basic manners amid the growth of digital platforms, using social media to abuse others and spread content that could divide society.
“Do not turn social media into a platform to insult, abuse, berate or humiliate anyone,” Sultan Ibrahim said in his Royal Address at the 105th Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at the Tuanku Canselor Hall in Shah Alam today.
His Majesty also expressed concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake images and videos intended to insult and embarrass individuals.
“Remember that behind every name and face that is hated and insulted is a human being with a family, dignity and feelings.
“There are also parties using social media as a platform to incite hatred and divide society,” he added.
Sultan Ibrahim said differences in opinion should not become a reason for hostility, urging Malaysians to express their views respectfully and offer criticism constructively.
“We can disagree, but we must express our views in good and respectful language.
“If you wish to criticise, do so constructively. If you wish to offer advice or correct someone, do so with courtesy and consideration,” His Majesty said.
The King also called on Malaysians not to believe or share news before verifying its authenticity, warning that the rush to be the first to share information could lead to the spread of slander and hatred.
“Do not let our desire to be the first to share something uncertain turn us into people who spread slander and hatred,” he said.
Sultan Ibrahim said love for the country and national unity could be strengthened when respect and good manners became part of everyday life.
His Majesty said he wanted to see a mature society that could exercise freedom of expression without insulting others or creating hatred.
“I want to see us become a mature society in our communication, free to express ourselves with good manners, brave enough to share our views without insulting others, and firm in defending our principles without sowing hatred,” Sultan Ibrahim explained. – October 17, 2026
