KUALA LUMPUR – Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is widely expected to announce the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly this afternoon, paving the way for a fresh state election.
According to a media invitation dispatched by the Premier’s Office, a high-stakes special press conference has been summoned for 3.30 pm at the Satria Pertiwi Complex, Kuching.
Speculation surrounding an early dissolution has reached fever pitch in recent days, fueled by mounting signals of an imminent trip to the ballot box.
The political maneuver comes right on the heels of the assembly concluding its final sitting on Wednesday, where the state successfully passed the Sarawak Budget 2027.
Under the current mandate, the term for the 82-seat legislature was not set to expire until February 2027.
During the previous state polls on December 18, 2021, the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition—captained by Abang Johari—secured a landslide victory, capturing 76 out of 82 seats.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) picked up four seats, while the DAP secured two. – October 23, 2026
