KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, without compromise, into the death of Noorizwan Zulkefly, who died while in police custody.
In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail to obtain further information on the case.
Expressing his understanding of the grief and anxiety of the family, who are waiting for answers, Anwar called for updates on the case to be communicated to them.
“I acknowledge the presence of the family of the late Noorizwan Zulkefly, who came to submit an appeal letter to me today. I am deeply saddened by his passing and understand the grief and anxiety of the family as they await answers.
“I was scheduled to attend several engagements in Melaka today and had delegated my officer to receive the letter and hear firsthand the concerns raised by the family,” he said.
Noorizwan, 42, was detained by Cheras police on Sept 19 to assist in investigations into cases under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 457 of the Penal Code and Section 379 of the Penal Code.
He died while in police custody on Oct 1.
Earlier, Noorizwan’s family sought the Prime Minister’s assistance to ensure a transparent investigation into his death and called for those responsible to be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
They went to Anwar’s residence in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, this morning to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s representative.
The memorandum, submitted by Noorizwan’s younger brother, Nooranis Zulkefly, together with lawyers from Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), stated that the family had serious concerns over the injuries found on the deceased’s body during the post-mortem.
Meanwhile, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Aida Abdul Hamid said in a statement today that the post-mortem conducted on Noorizwan found no injuries to his internal organs, although several external injuries were identified.
She said the cause of death was recorded as “pending laboratory analysis” and classified as sudden death.
Aida said the Custodial Crime and Death Investigation Unit (USJKT) under JIPS would continue its investigation from various angles.
She added that the case had been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) in accordance with Section 26 of the Independent Police Conduct Commission Act 2022 (Act 839). – October 24, 2026
