KUALA LUMPUR – The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has committed to preserving the Selangor Sultanate’s Islamic heritage by reinforcing the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed, safeguarding the integrity of state fatwas, and strengthening religious administration and education.

Addressing the opening of the Multaqa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj at Dewan Jubli Perak today, the Ruler stressed that Islamic governance represents a profound trust requiring airtight collaboration among state agencies, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council, the Mufti, the Syariah Courts, and the state administration.

Accompanying the Ruler were the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, and the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

“In my view, the legacy of the Selangor Sultanate in empowering Islam is reflected through three core pillars. First, the continuity of governance and the commitment to elevating the status of Islam. Second, the support for a comprehensive and integrated educational system.

“Third, the establishment of institutions that translate Syariah into policies, fatwas and services for the people,” Sultan Sharafuddin said, adding that these pillars must adapt to contemporary challenges.

The Sultan underscored the vital synergy between the ulama (scholars) and umara (rulers), noting that while the monarchy provides patronage, scholars bear the duty of offering unvarnished, sincere counsel free of vested interests.

“History should not be viewed merely as a narrative of success, devoid of trials. Past Malay Sultanates encountered a multitude of challenges. Even as the forms of governance evolved, the sacred trust of upholding Islam remained steadfast. Therein lies the true strength of any legacy,” he said.

Turning his focus to the digital age, Sultan Sharafuddin warned the public against acquiring religious knowledge through bite-sized social media videos that often spread fragmented and unverified claims.

“Instead, refer to authoritative sources and seek guidance from recognised scholars. To all my subjects, uphold unity and respect the institutions entrusted with the management of Islamic affairs.

“Examine history with honesty, discuss differences with proper decorum, and put forward proposals that are grounded in reality,” he added.

During the event, Sultan Sharafuddin also officiated the launch of two books—Sheikhul Islam and the Muftis of Selangor (1930–2021) and Compilation of Fatwa Articles (2001–2005) – Volume 1—alongside the Selangor State Mufti Department’s new e-Fatwa System. – October 29, 2026
