KUALA LUMPUR — Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has warned members of the Dewan Negara Perak and dignitaries of the Royal Court against exploiting the Ruler’s name, royal influence or their titles for personal gain, financial benefits or business opportunities.

His Royal Highness also cautioned them against allowing themselves to be used by others for improper purposes or exerting undue pressure on individuals.

“Shun corruption, the abuse of power and any conduct that might give rise to suspicion or tarnish the reputation of the throne and the Royal Court,” he decreed at the 175th Meeting of Dewan Negara Perak at Istana Iskandariah today.

“Never allow your position to become a means of seeking special privileges, accumulating personal wealth or interfering in matters beyond the scope of your responsibilities.”

Sultan Nazrin also urged the members and royal dignitaries to exercise sound judgement in their communications, particularly on social media, warning that careless remarks and unverified information could have serious consequences.

“Matters entrusted to you in confidence must be safeguarded. Information whose accuracy has yet to be established must not be circulated,” he said.

He added that opinions should be expressed with propriety to avoid slander and discord, noting that a single remark or recording shared on social media could give rise to different interpretations.

The Sultan further called on them to avoid disputes, power struggles and factionalism while maintaining close ties with the people.

He stressed that public grievances must be heard and addressed, particularly those affecting vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, orphans, low-income families and marginalised communities.

“Maintain good relations with people from every walk of life. Our State is home to people of diverse ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. Respect this diversity and work towards strengthening unity, in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin also reminded members of Dewan Negara Perak and royal dignitaries to understand the monarchy’s role within the framework of a constitutional monarchy and respect the limits of their authority and responsibilities.

He urged them to work professionally with the state government and institutions without interfering in administrative affairs or using their positions to advance partisan political interests.

The Sultan also encouraged them to expand their knowledge, improve their working practices, understand changing societal needs and make prudent use of technology.

He stressed that every palace dignitary must set a positive example for their families, officers, staff and the wider community.

“Show that those who are close to the Ruler are equally committed to their responsibilities, and that those who are accorded honour also know how to honour others,” he added. — October 29, 2026
