Malaysia has six months’ food supply, no need for emergency stockpiling: Ahmad Zahid

Deputy Prime Minister says national food stocks are sufficient, dismissing concerns over potential supply disruptions despite preparedness drives in several countries

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has enough food supplies to sustain the country for at least six months, with no need for emergency stockpiling measures, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said the government remained committed to safeguarding national food security and ensuring sufficient supplies of essential goods for Malaysians and other residents, Bernama reported.

“We see no need for such measures because our food security and stock levels are sufficient.

“We know that we have the capacity to sustain food security for at least six months,” he told reporters after attending the Malaysia-China Cooperation Meeting on Investment, Trade and Economic Empowerment here today.

Ahmad Zahid was responding to reports that several countries had urged their citizens to stockpile food and other necessities in anticipation of possible emergencies.

He stressed that Malaysia was not facing circumstances that warranted the public keeping additional emergency supplies at home.

“We are not in a state of emergency and, Insya-Allah, we are far from such a situation,” he said.

At least 33 countries have reportedly issued preparedness guidelines advising their populations to keep emergency supplies of food, drinking water and other essential items.

International media reports attributed the advisories to a range of global risks, including armed conflicts, extreme weather events, power outages and cyberattacks.

France and the United Kingdom are among the countries that have stepped up public preparedness campaigns, recommending that households maintain enough essential supplies to last at least 72 hours, or three days. – November 2, 2026
