KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Health (MOH) is awaiting laboratory analysis results and will conduct follow-up inspections at the Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd factory to verify compliance with the Food Act 1983 following complaints of alleged food poisoning involving the company’s products.
In a statement today, the ministry said preliminary investigations were underway into complaints circulating on social media and media reports of alleged food poisoning following the consumption of Gardenia products, particularly Gardenia Original Classic White Bread and Twiggies Choc-A-Lot.
MOH said it had sought an explanation from Gardenia Bakeries (KL) and that, according to the company, its internal investigation found no irregularities in the production processes, changes to recipes or non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and food safety controls for the products concerned, Bernama reported.
“Traceability of the products involved remains limited as the batch numbers and expiry dates provided were incomplete.
“However, the remaining products and their packaging were collected with the complainants’ consent for laboratory analysis,” MOH said.
It added that the company’s findings were based on its internal investigation and could not yet form the basis for a definitive conclusion on the cause of the reported symptoms.
The ministry also assured that appropriate enforcement action would be taken if evidence of any breach of the law or risks to food safety was found.
MOH also advised the public against speculation that could cause confusion, while individuals experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or discomfort after consuming the suspected products were urged to seek immediate medical attention and report the matter to the nearest District Health Office.
Meanwhile, Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd (Gardenia KL) said it took seriously every report concerning its products and acknowledged the concerns raised on social media.
In a statement, Gardenia KL said it was also concerned about the well-being of the consumers and their families involved, adding that its representatives had met the consumers concerned to gain a clearer understanding of the reported incident and obtain further information.
“The products concerned have also been collected for inspection as part of the ongoing investigation,” it said. – November 8, 2026
