PKR student wing lodges 14 police reports against Muhyiddin over alleged Spanco graft

Group urges MACC to investigate Perikatan Nasional chairman’s involvement in matter

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR student wing Mahasiswa Keadilan Malaysia (MKM) has filed 14 police reports against former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over alleged graft with fleet management company Spanco Sdn Bhd.

MKM vice-president Yuveraaj Pillai said they also urge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman on the issue.

“We are confident that many hidden actions by him will be revealed with investigations into him and his family,” he told reporters at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.

“The cheapest tenders should be awarded. It is common sense. This involves public funds, it is the people’s money – our money.

“We hope those who plundered the people’s funds are brought to justice and can no longer deceive the people with their political propaganda.”

This comes after Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan’s revelation last week that he had sued the government for terminating a letter of intent (LOI) with the corporation for a vehicle fleet concession before awarding it to Spanco.

In 2018, the then-Pakatan Harapan government called for contract proposals for the supply, maintenance, and management of its fleet of official vehicles for 15 years.

The LOI for a vehicle fleet concession was awarded to the Berjaya Group and Naza Group, resulting in the formation of a consortium amounting to about RM3.96 billion.

Besides the Berjaya-Naza consortium, proposals received by the government included companies such as Sime Darby Bhd, Samling Group, Comos, DRB-Hicom Bhd, Go Auto, and Spanco.

However, the LOI was cancelled in 2020 when PN took over Putrajaya, and was subsequently granted to Spanco for an additional RM700 million, Tan claimed.

Earlier this year, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin also called on the Finance Ministry to disclose all public projects awarded by Muhyiddin during his tenure as prime minister, including the reward granted to Spanco.

Questioning if corruption was at play, Sim purported that the award had amounted to RM4.62 billion, which is a 17% price difference from the grant awarded to the Berjaya-Naza consortium. – July 28, 2023
