KUALA LUMPUR – A routine foraging trip into the jungle area near Taman Perpaduan, Kuching ended tragically for former soldier Kamarau Adong, 50, who was found dead this morning by rescuers after two days of searching.

Kamarau’s wife, Mek Mandu, 62, said she last saw her husband when he entered the jungle to look for bamboo shoots at 7am yesterday.

“We would come here at least twice a week to look for jungle produce.”

Mek said she stayed behind to look for paku ferns by the roadside and waited for her husband in their parked car until dusk.

The couple often forage the area for edible greens, which they would then sell at the Sg Apong market, according to Borneo Post Online.

A police drone, which was used as part of the aerial search, spotted the body, which led rescuers to the site at around 10am, just a few metres away from Jalan Ong Kee Hui.

Paramedics from Sarawak General Hospital pronounced Kamarau dead at the scene. His body was handed over to the police for transport to the hospital’s Forensics Department.

The rescue team comprised personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), police, and Civil Defence Force (APM). The Bomba’s K9 unit also joined the search today, with Daisy the sniffer dog helping rescuers.

According to Bomba, a call was received at 8.20pm yesterday seeking help to locate the victim.

A search was immediately launched but was suspended just before midnight. – October 14, 2023
