Pahang, Perak, we’re coming for you: Sanusi says PAS eyeing taking over more states

Newly minted central committee member says party must also be less ‘boring’ to woo youth vote

SHAH ALAM – Newly minted PAS central committee member Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has voiced the party’s intention to wrest control of the Pahang and Perak state governments next.

Addressing delegates at the PAS Muktamar here this morning, the Kedah menteri besar assured that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) component party will maintain its hold on the state governments in Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.

“Apart from (PAS’ hold on) the four states, PAS plans to move forward to the next level (by) controlling at least one more state, either Pahang or Perak.

“If we can’t get Perak, we can go to Pahang, (but) if we can get both then that would be good,” Sanusi said during the closing ceremony today.

He also said that to improve the party’s influence in Parliament and state assemblies, PAS must work on bettering its political agenda to be less “boring”, especially to younger voters.

“PAS needs to move towards new fields (by) diversifying our political approach without being confined to our party’s traditional strategies.

“There are no other parties that Malaysians can rely on other than PAS to arrange the nation’s political journey.”

In August, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad reportedly claimed that there was an attempt to oust the state’s Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional government, with the plan involving luring at least four assemblymen to join PN.

The allegation comes after state elections were held in six states – Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Penang.

While the unity administration managed to retain its hold on Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Penang, PAS recorded a 92% success rate in the state polls, with the results indicating that the party was the best performer in the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN.

PN swept all 32 state seats in Terengganu as some of the Bersatu candidates contested under the PAS banner. In the six state elections, Bersatu bagged 40 out of the 81 seats it contested while PAS won 105 out of 127 seats it ran in. – October 22, 2023
