State polls: Young voters in Hulu Kelang unaware of hot seat status

Youth voters in Hulu Kelang remain noncommittal about their vote, with many surprised it was an election period in the first place

HULU KELANG – Some of the young voters in Hulu Kelang (N18) appear oblivious about Selangor’s polls this Saturday, even though their constituency is considered a hot seat dubbed ‘battle of the giants’.

Hulu Kelang has emerged as a battleground in Selangor as former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is now the Perikatan Nasional (PN) information chief, will face off against former party colleague and Bukit Melawati incumbent Juwairiya Zulkifli of PKR.

However, Scoop recently spoke to several voters below the age of 30 in the constituency and found that they were not interested in the polls.

Ahmad Danny, 21, said he does not know anything about politics and only knew that it was election period after seeing party flags put up around his housing area.

When told that PN’s Azmin and PH’s Juwairiya will be contesting, he said Azmin’s name rang a bell, so he would most probably vote for him.

A 23-year-old vape shop worker here, who wants to be known only as Zani, said people are generally on the fence because PN has more flags and banners up, but most of his friends are fans of PKR president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“But our friends and customers, who are mostly young people aged below 30 never talked about politics.

“We don’t know anything about the candidates to judge (who is better); we only know that PH is the government and Anwar is our prime minister, and Selangor is under PH.

“But we are still going to vote because we get criticised by our peers if we don’t.”

Other young voters also shared the same sentiment that they do not know a lot about politics to give a comment, nor have they decided who to vote for, but they are still going to vote. – August 7, 2023
