FAM’s heritage scandal: when ‘clerical error’ became a national embarrassment – T. Vignesh

Malaysia (FAM) scrambles to appeal, the scandal lays bare the rot at the heart of Malaysian football and why nothing short of a full leadership overhaul can restore credibility

Clerical error? What clerical error?

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has remained silent about the supposed clerical mistake made during the registration of the ‘heritage players’. Today, that silence speaks volumes.

FIFA has released its notification of the grounds of the decision, clearly showing that FAM’s submission of false documents to register seven ‘heritage players’ was not a minor mistake or a simple oversight. It was a case of deliberate dishonesty.

FIFA’s detailed findings reveal that the official documents contained falsified claims about players’ ancestry. This means someone within FAM believed it was acceptable to fabricate heritage connections just to qualify players for Malaysia.

In any footballing nation with integrity, such deceit would warrant a complete overhaul. Yet, here we are watching FAM’s futile attempt to appeal a decision that cannot be reversed.

An appeal? Seriously? FAM’s decision to challenge FIFA’s ruling only adds to the absurdity. What exactly are they appealing – the fact that they were caught?

At this point, the issue goes far beyond procedural matters or misinterpretations of eligibility rules. It is about accountability, transparency, and ethics. Qualities that the leadership of Malaysian football has consistently failed to uphold.

This scandal marks the lowest point for Malaysian football in decades, perhaps ever.

Forget the Harimau Malaya’s spirit on the field; this incident has stripped away what little credibility the sport still had. FAM’s leadership, long criticised for inconsistency and inaction, has now crossed the line from incompetence to outright deceit.

The entire FAM executive board must resign. All of them. When a national institution’s reputation collapses so dramatically, partial resignations or token suspensions are not enough.

Public trust cannot be rebuilt while those responsible for this downfall remain in power.

Moreover, the government cannot remain silent. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail owes the public an explanation. His ministry is responsible for immigration and documentation. How did these fraudulent ancestry claims slip through?

If government systems were manipulated to allow false records, this issue extends beyond football into the realm of governance and integrity.

The time for excuses has passed. FAM cannot move forward with the same individuals trying to solve problems they helped create.

Malaysian football needs a fresh start. One led by individuals who value integrity over short-term gains. Until that happens, no appeal, apology, or PR effort can erase this disgrace.

This is not just a reprimand for FAM; it is a complete loss of credibility. – October 7, 2025
