BUKIT JALIL — Sarina Rhythmic Gymnastics Club (SRGC) is set to host activation events nationwide, designed to inspire young gymnasts to embrace the sport through its inaugural Piala Puteri Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship.

SRGC founder Sarina Sundara Rajah said the championship is set to empower and nurture talent while promoting the sport’s values beyond athleticism.

She added these events will feature workshops and empowerment programmes for young girls.

“For us at SRGC, rhythmic gymnastics is more than just sports as it provides the girls an opportunity to also gain other values so that they can contribute to society,” said Sarina during a press conference at the competition’s launch.

The Piala Puteri Championship has been in the works for four years and is slated to become an annual highlight.

“We hope it will be an annual event because initially, the plan was to organise a series of competitions – a league across Malaysia.

“I know it is a very ambitious plan. We have a big vision for the girls in this sport, but for now, we will start with one competition,” Sarina added.

Today’s launch signifies the beginning of a journey to empower young girls, giving them a platform to compete and showcase their talent.

Sarina also hopes the event could be a stepping stone for young athletes to gain invaluable competitive experience.

“We are also providing a consistent platform for competition in local and international formats so it will allow international clubs to also participate,” said the 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

The championship will welcome participants from the ages of five to 18 years old, spanning both individual and group categories.

It will be held at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, from December 12 to 17. — September 15, 2023
