Asiad: Zii Jia storms into round of 16 in 18 minutes

Shuttler trashes Timor Leste 21-0, 21-7, will meet either Thailand or Vietnam next

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia smashed his way to the third round of the individual event at the Hangzhou Asian Games after thrashing Timor Leste’s Mourinho Zefi Costa Gusmao De Jesus. 

The former All-England champion only took 18 minutes to trash his opponent with a score of 21-0, 21-7. 

His next match will be with either reigning world champion from Thailand, Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Vietnam’s world number 102-ranked Nguyen Hai Dang. 

Meanwhile, independent shuttler Goh Jin Wei won her second-round match in the women’s singles category, defeating Vietnam’s Vu Thi An Thu with a score of 21-10, 21-13.  

The world number 33 player is expected to face Indonesia’s world number seven-ranked Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the next round.  

However, debutant K. Letshanaa was unable to replicate the success of her counterpart as she fell short against Thailand’s world number 15 ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the women’s singles category. 

The 20-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals in the 2023 Vietnam Open lost two consecutive games with a score of 21-13,21-10 in a match that lasted for 39 minutes. – October 3, 2023
