KUALA LUMPUR – Iconic sporting victories will forever remain in the hearts of Malaysians, and among them is Harimau Malaya’s AFF Championship win in 2010.

The architect of this historic win is none other than former national team head coach Datuk K. Rajagopal who etched his name in Malaysian football history by leading a team where half the players were nurtured under his guidance since his tenure as the Under-19 team head coach in 2004 at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

Speaking to Scoop, Rajagopal emphasised the pivotal role of educating young footballers, underscoring its significance in shaping them into future societal role models.

He said the job of a coach is not only crafting athletes but also shaping the individuals who can positively contribute to society.

“When executing my coaching duties for clubs or national teams, I consistently prioritised the development of young players. I guided them on the importance of honesty and hard work, extending beyond the playing field.

“Therefore, I always reminded these young players to stay rooted, respect their elders, and maintain humility, irrespective of their achievements in titles and medals.

“Success is a collaborative effort between the coach and the player. Education provides the roadmap, but the player must walk the path with dedication and passion,” he said.

Expressing satisfaction with his coaching legacy, Rajagopal pointed to notable players like Safee Sali, Aidil Zafuan, Zaquan Adha, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, and K. Gurusamy as shining examples who excelled both on and off the field, becoming role models in society.

Moreover, Rajagopal emphasised the importance of spirituality in shielding his young proteges from negative influences.

“Throughout my time as a coach, I have never interfered too much in a player’s personal life, but I have educated them on the importance of faith.

“Spirituality has been a guiding force in my coaching philosophy, providing players with a moral compass and a sense of purpose beyond the game.

“Take Kaka, the former Brazilian player, as an example. His unwavering faith not only fueled his on-field focus but also guided him through the challenges of a professional football career.

“By instilling spiritual values, I laid a foundation for players to make positive choices and avoid distractions that could hinder their personal and professional growth, as they are my boys, and I always aspired for their success at all costs,” added Rajagopal.

Beyond the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup victory, where Malaysia secured the championship for the first time since its inception in 1996, Rajagopal is renowned for guiding Malaysia’s Under-23 side to its first gold medal in 20 years at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos.

The 67-year-old coach’s illustrious career includes stints with Selangor FC, Kelantan FC, Sarawak FC, PKNS, and most recently, coaching the Brunei national team. – November 27, 2023
