Liew Daren parts ways with Zii Jia

While the shuttler prepares to qualify for the Olympics, his coaching staff has to do with one less member

KUALA LUMPUR – As the race to qualify for next year’s Paris Olympics heats up, Team LZJ received a major blow as Liew Daren has decided to leave the team.

“Perhaps this is the right time for a much-needed recharge before the next adventure,” Daren said in a social media post.

In addition to serving as independent men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia’s assistant coach, Daren assumed the role of the 11th-ranked player’s sparring partner, following Zii Jia’s separation from coach Indra Wijaya in November last year.

Remaining with the team, Daren witnessed Zii Jia appoint former national women’s singles coach Wong Tat Meng as the new coaching director when the news was announced in May.

However, in a recent Facebook post, Daren announced his resignation for personal reasons.

“I leave with a heavy heart but also with wonderful memories as being in Team LZJ has provided me with another meaningful chapter in my badminton life.

“I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to Team LZJ and wish them all the best for the coming season,” said Daren who joined Team LZJ in March last year.

The 36-year-old World Championships bronze medalist assured his supporters that this marks a transition rather than an end, as he eagerly anticipates a much-needed recharge for the next adventure in his career.

In an official statement, Team LZJ expressed their respect for Daren’s decision, recognising him as an integral part of the team since its inception, and playing a crucial role in their development.

“His presence will be sorely missed by all within the team. As such, the doors at Team LZJ will always remain open for Daren.

“Thank you captain for all you have done and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours,” read the statement. – December 29, 2023
