KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysia Open has always been famous for its energetic atmosphere and passionate badminton fans.
However, women’s singles player Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, who played in the first game of the day at 9 am, was taken aback by the vociferous support of the home fans so early in the morning at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.
“Every time I play here, I have always received fantastic support.
“I was shocked to hear the thunderous cheers from the energetic home fans here, especially early in the morning,” said Tzu Ying, who could be playing in her last Malaysia Open after announcing plans to retire after the 2024 Paris Olympics in July.
Tzu Ying booked her place in the second round after defeating US shuttler Beiwen Zhang, 23-21, 21-19 in straight sets.
She will next face Busanan Ongbamrungphan from Thailand, who staged a comeback to beat Gao Fang Jie from China, 17-21, 22-20, 21-10.
Staying injury-free is Tzu Ying’s priority this year as she aims to build up steam to qualify and compete at what would be her last Summer Games in Paris.
“My performance in the second half of last year was not that great; I sustained injuries and had to make do with a tight schedule, which affected my body condition.
“As for this year, I just want to stay in the best shape,” said the world number four.
Tzu Ying acknowledges the growing competitiveness in women’s singles and commits to exerting extra effort to maintain her top-ranking status before retiring from badminton. — January 10, 2024
