KUALA LUMPUR – Beyond the accolades and victories lies a narrative of courage and defiance.

National para-archer G. Daneshan’s journey is about more than just winning; it is about rewriting the narrative about disabilities and sports.

In a world often quick to underestimate and sideline those with disabilities, Daneshan would love to be seen as a reminder that true strength lies in resilience and an unwavering belief in one’s potential.

The 26-year-old recently qualified for this year’s Paris Paralympics after winning silver in the men’s compound event at the 8th Fazza Para Archery World Ranking Tournament in Dubai.

Ranked world number 32, Daneshan lost to Austria’s Michael Meier 133-143 in the final.

Growing up in Kulim and coping with the effects of polio during childhood, which led to deformities in his legs, Daneshan often faced bullying at school that significantly impacted his studies.

Archery proved to be a way out for Daneshan, who has been fully focused on the sport since he was 17.

The income he has earned from archery, together with contributions from his siblings, has allowed his father to retire and spend more time with his mother over the years.

Speaking to Scoop, Daneshan shared how winning medals for the country changed the perception of his schoolmates, who once used to bully him.

“Studying at school was tough for me. They (schoolmates) called me names all the time. There was once I got mad and threw a chair at them.

“My father had to come to school (to see the teacher) when I got into a fight once, and he cried. I told him I wanted to quit school, but he wouldn’t let me.

“It was tough…they (schoolmates) didn’t understand, as they felt we were all able-bodied. I told myself it was okay and that my time (to succeed) had not yet come.

“But since I started winning medals, some of those classmates contacted me and wanted to be my friends. It’s quite amusing,” said Daneshan when contacted.

Meanwhile, Daneshan also expressed his aspiration to inspire individuals with disabilities through his consistent performances.

He hopes that those facing similar challenges will persevere and achieve success in life through hard work and dedication

“I am a testament to what individuals with disabilities can achieve. We must not let society’s limitations define us. Through sports and relentless effort, we can showcase our capabilities and prove the naysayers wrong.

“I’m really proud of what the sport has taught me. There are so many people out there who are going through the same situation as me, and they can also achieve in their lives when they do their best through their hard work.

“Society may say and do countless negative things towards us, but we should not let our guards down. We need to keep trying, always give our 100%, and one day we will definitely find ourselves and our capabilities.

“I urge everyone with disabilities to keep striving in life and one day they will reach glory, and I will do my part by inspiring everyone through my performances,” Daneshan added.

Daneshan is the third Malaysian para archer to qualify for Paris 2024, with the other two being the 2019 world champions S. Suresh and Nur Jannaton Abd Jalil in the men’s recurve and women’s compound events, respectively.

This year’s Paralympics are scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8. – March 18, 2024
