KUALA LUMPUR – World number 66 squash player Addeen Idrakie stuck to his game plan to defeat his opponent in the first round of the Asian qualifiers for the World Squash Championships, held at the National Sports Complex squash courts in Jalan Duta today.
The tournament’s second seed easily swatted aside the challenge of Leo Chung from Hong Kong 11-3, 11-8, 11-2 in just 28 minutes.
“Today was pretty straightforward, I know him well and overall I just stuck to my game plan. I was patient and minimised my mistakes, and I think this style suits me.
“I executed well but it is only the first round, tomorrow will be my real match so I hope to continue the momentum.
“I’m really excited to play in this tournament as I have never made it to the world championships before, hopefully, I will make it,” said the 30-year-old.
Addeen will take on compatriot Darren Pragasam in tomorrow’s quarter-final.
Darren beat Ammar Altamimi from Kuwait 11-9, 7-11, 11-2, 11-1 in 37 minutes.
“We last met at the Costa North Coast Open in Australia last year and I won.
“He has been playing well so I’ll be watching out for his gameplan and I think it will be an interesting match tomorrow,” added Addeen.
Mohammad Syafiq Kamal will join both Addeen and Darren in the quarter-finals after defeating compatriot Hafiz Zhafri 11-7, 11-3, 6-11, 11-5 in 51 minutes. – April 18, 2024
