KUALA LUMPUR – China’s rising badminton star Li Shi Feng is setting his sights on a remarkable performance at the upcoming Paris Olympics in July, eager to make his mark in his inaugural appearance at the world’s biggest sporting event.
Having secured sixth place in the Paris Olympics qualifiers, Shi Feng is poised to join his teammate Shi Yuqi in representing China on the world stage.
Despite his young age of 24, Shi Feng boasts an impressive track record of championship victories.
As a two-time junior world champion in 2017 and 2018, he clinched the All England, Sudirman Cup, and Asian Games titles last year.
He also played a crucial role in China’s recent victory at the Thomas Cup earlier this month in Chengdu.
Driven by the desire to emulate his idol, Lin Dan, Shi Feng aims to follow in the footsteps of the two-time Olympic gold medalist.
“I’m thrilled to have qualified for my first Olympics and eager to compete at the highest level.
“While many consider us (Yuqi and him) as favourites for medals contenders, the competition will be fierce with every athlete aiming for success.
“And I admit, Lin Dan is a huge inspiration for me and I hope to achieve similar greatness in my career,” said Shi Feng.
Shi Feng’s journey to Olympic glory continues as he advances to the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters, following a decisive victory over national player Leong Jun Hao with scores of 21-15, 21-16 today.
Ranked third in the tournament, Shi Feng prepares for a challenging match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long tomorrow.
It’s worth noting that since its inception in 2009, the Malaysia Masters has yet to see a Chinese player claim victory in the men’s singles category. – May 23, 2024
