KUALA LUMPUR – The Youth and Sports Ministry is preparing for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand by establishing a comprehensive set of key performance indicators (KPIs) for the Malaysian contingent.

Minister Hannah Yeoh addressed Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim in a written parliamentary reply today, confirming that the finalisation of these KPIs is expected by year’s end.

This initiative follows a post-mortem analysis conducted by the ministry, evaluating the performance of the national contingent at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games concluded in May.

“Monitoring of these KPIs (once it is set) will be carried out over four months to ensure the continued empowerment of athlete development,” said the Segambut MP.

Hannah added that the National Sports Council (NSC) has also conducted a comprehensive review of the contingent’s performance at the Cambodia SEA Games.

Plans are underway to enhance future performances, particularly with an eye on the 2025 Bangkok SEA Games and other upcoming sporting events.

“To enhance our contingent’s competitiveness in the 2025 Bangkok SEA Games and other sporting competitions, the ministry will also develop short-term and long-term strategies through our elite Athlete Training Programme, which is scheduled to take place on November 9,” Hannah said in the written reply.

She also said that her ministry is working collaboratively with key stakeholders such as the Olympic Council of Malaysia, the Malaysia Paralympic Council, and the Education Ministry.

These collaborations are aimed at augmenting athletes’ performances in international sporting events, ensuring their preparedness and performance reach the highest standards during competitions.

Reflecting on the 2023 SEA Games held from May 5 to 17, the Malaysian contingent comprised 677 athletes, consisting of 403 men and 274 women, alongside 237 officials.

They secured the 7th position in the standings, clinching a total of 175 medals – 34 gold, 45 silver, and 96 bronze – falling slightly short of the ministry’s initial target of 40 gold medals. – November 2, 2023
