KUALA LUMPUR – The upcoming Super League match between Selangor FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will be played without spectators, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) announced today.
This significant decision follows the controversy surrounding the Red Giants’ withdrawal from the Charity Shield match on May 10.
In a statement issued after a board meeting, MFL detailed the repercussions for Selangor FC’s non-attendance at the Charity Shield.
“The Super League match between Selangor FC and JDT at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium will be played without spectators.
“The operation of this match will be managed collaboratively between MFL and Selangor FC, with selected representatives from both clubs allowed to attend,” the statement read.
MFL also imposed a RM100,000 fine on Selangor FC, specifying that the amount will be donated to a charity organisation which is yet to be decided.
In addition to JDT being awarded a walkover 3-0 victory and three points for the Super League match, MFL announced further penalties: “Selangor FC will face a deduction of three points in the 2024-2025 Super League competition.”
Selangor FC are also required to compensate for the losses incurred by JDT and MFL.
“MFL will gather the necessary information and costs from JDT and MFL secretariat before forwarding them to Selangor FC for further review and discussion,” the statement added.
The controversy began when Selangor FC withdrew from the Charity Shield match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Johor due to a series of alarming incidents – including an acid attack on winger Faisal Halim on May 5, which resulted in fourth-degree burns.
The decision to withdraw was made after detailed discussions with various parties, citing safety concerns for the players and staff. – June 25, 2024
