KUALA LUMPUR – As world-class athletes, Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik understand the importance of having top-notch facilities and a strong support system to stay at the pinnacle of their sport.
That is why the former world champions have chosen to remain with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) by signing a new four-year contract with the national body on Friday.
Speaking to the press today, Wooi Yik emphasised the significance of having the best resources as they pursue their dream of winning gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“Aaron and I both place great importance on our careers, and we share the same goal of excelling at the LA 2028 Games.
“We are grateful to BAM, especially to Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, for continuing to trust in us.
“There are many positive reasons why we want to stay with BAM; as top players, we know BAM provides the best facilities and top coaches, which are crucial for us,” said Wooi Yik, who, along with Aaron, also received RM125,000 each from BAM for successfully retaining their Olympic bronze medals at the recent Paris Games.
Aaron echoed Wooi Yik’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the support and incentives they’ve received over the years.
“First of all, we must thank BAM and Tan Sri for supporting us over the years. In a way, I’d say we’re like business partners. Despite all the ups and downs, BAM and Tan Sri have stood by us.
“We promise to continue fighting for the country, for BAM, and ourselves until 2028,” said Aaron.
On Friday, Aaron and Wooi Yik, along with Paris Olympics men’s singles bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia, were each awarded a Tiggo 7 Pro car by car manufacturer Chery in recognition of their achievements in Paris.
Additionally, BAM awarded RM60,000 to coaching director Rexy Mainaky and the rest of the coaching and support team for their tireless efforts in helping the players peak at the Olympics. – August 24, 2024
