SEPANG — As the Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) season finale approaches, reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia has expressed caution about his prospects for both the sprint and main races, likely set to take place in Barcelona.
The final race, initially scheduled for Valencia on November 15 to 17, was cancelled due to severe flooding, prompting discussions with the Catalonia government to relocate the event to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
“We know that it’s quite difficult, but in Barcelona, anything can happen,” Bagnaia, commonly known as Pecco, said during a post-race press conference at the Malaysian Grand Prix, Bernama reported.
He reflected on the challenges of the circuit, particularly noting the tricky conditions of corners two and five, which proved difficult for him in a previous crash in June.
Carlos Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports chief sporting officer, highlighted that Barcelona was the best alternative given its proximity to Valencia and the influx of fans already travelling through the region.
Dorna Sports is the exclusive commercial and TV rights holder for MotoGP.
Ezpeleta confirmed that the venue would be finalised within the next 48 hours.
Bagnaia’s recent victory at the Sepang International Circuit has revitalised his championship hopes, narrowing the gap in the standings to just 24 points behind leader Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing.
Currently, Bagnaia holds second place in the standings with 461 points, while Martin leads with 485 points. — November 3, 2024
