Women’s U19 T20 World Cup: USA stuns Ireland to top Group B

After a tough loss to Sri Lanka in their opening match, Malaysia is gearing up for a challenging encounter against India

KUALA LUMPUR — The United States of America (USA), fully comprising players of Indian origin, stunned Ireland by walking away with a seven-wicket victory to top Group B of the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, today.

The Irish, who won the toss, chose to bat but were all out after 17.4 overs, scoring 74 runs at the Johor Cricket Academy Oval, Johor Bahru, according to the official results website.

The Americans easily completed the chase for 75 runs in 9.3 overs, with Disha Dhingra, Chetna Reddy Pagydyala and Isani Vaghela displaying formidable batting skills to score the necessary runs in just 9.3 overs.

In another Group B match in the evening, reigning runner-up England beat Pakistan by six wickets after bowling them out with 66 runs.

USA placed themselves above England based on net run rate though both have secured three points each, followed by Pakistan and Ireland with one point each.

The action is set to continue at the Bayuemas Oval in Klang with Group A matches tomorrow with host Malaysia, who lost the first match against Sri Lanka yesterday, facing an uphill task against defending champions India, while Sri Lanka plays West Indies.

Group C: Nigeria beat New Zealand by two runs; South Africa beat Samoa by 10 wickets.

Group D: Australia beat Bangladesh by two wickets; Scotland beat Nepal by one wicket.
