Tengku Zafrul back in the mix for BAM presidency

The post has been vacant since after the Paris Olympics last year when Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria stepped down

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has been nominated for the presidency of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam confirmed today, after chairing the association’s executive committee meeting, that Tengku Zafrul is back in the mix to succeed Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

Back in September 2023, Scoop reported that Tengku Zafrul was the frontrunner for the position, given his corporate expertise and strong connections seen as assets to further commercialise BAM and attract sponsorships.

However, Norza’s surprise decision to extend his tenure at the helm had changed the course of events.

Following the 2024 Paris Olympics, Norza officially stepped down, paving the way for a new leader to take charge.

With the post now vacant, Tengku Zafrul’s name has resurfaced as a leading contender.

The BAM presidency is a highly influential role, shaping the direction of Malaysian badminton and overseeing the development of players at all levels.

If elected, Tengku Zafrul will face the challenge of revitalising the national team following a series of inconsistent performances on the international stage.

BAM today announced that elections for the president’s post will likely be held on May 10.

“Following discussions with our colleagues, in consideration of what is best for BAM, I am pleased to inform you that the majority of us have reached a consensus to nominate Tengku Zafrul for the post of president in the upcoming BAM elections.

“Tentatively the election is May 10. We looked at the larger picture of BAM, there is no personal interest here. We believe he is the right person to lead BAM and we will be there to assist.

“There is no specific nomination, but if there are any other names it will be proposed on the floor. As a former politician myself, I say that there should be no politics in BAM.

“BAM has already reached out to Tengku Zafrul and he has agreed.

“We want a president with experience and a well-known corporate figure. After Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, we need that kind of continuity,” said Subramaniam, who confirmed that he will defend his position as deputy president 1 at the elections. – March 25, 2025
