Paralympic medalists to receive cash rewards after Aidilfitri

Paralympic Council of Malaysia president says delays are due to sponsor constraints but assures payments will be made

KUALA LUMPUR — Cash rewards for Malaysia’s 2024 Paris Paralympic medallists are expected to be disbursed after the Aidilfitri celebrations, said Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin.

He explained that while efforts are underway to honour the commitment made by a foreign sponsor, there have been delays on the sponsor’s end.

His statement comes in response to concerns raised by athletes who have yet to receive their promised rewards.

“For your information, there is only one sponsor, a foreign company, and we are still in the process of arranging the disbursement. We are unsure which athlete is claiming they haven’t received it, but all have been informed of the timeline.

“I don’t see this as a major issue, and I believe everyone will receive their payment. Initially, we were told the funds would be released in the first quarter of 2025, but it now looks like it will be after Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said.

Megat was speaking to reporters after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri contribution handover ceremony for athletes from corporate companies and NGOs at the Malaysian Paralympic Sports Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan today.

Malaysia won a total of five medals at the Paris Paralympics—two golds, two silvers, and one bronze.

Around 60 athletes attended today’s event, which was also attended by PCM secretary-general Datuk R. Subramaniam and OKU Sentral president Datuk Dr Ras Adiba Radzi. — March 27, 2025
