KUALA LUMPUR – For national weightlifter Aniq Kasdan, this Hari Raya is extra special, not just because he gets to celebrate at home in Segamat, Johor, but because he can now give back to his family in ways he never could before.

The 23-year-old, who was just one kilogram shy of a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has worked tirelessly to achieve success in weightlifting. That success has allowed him to support his loved ones, furnishing their home with new furniture and ensuring their comfort.

“This Raya feels very different to me. It’s the first time in many years that I have been able to observe Ramadan and celebrate Hari Raya at home,” Aniq told Scoop.

“I feel incredibly grateful that my career as a national athlete has given me the ability to help my family. Before this, we didn’t have much, but now I can contribute more to our home.”

Since returning to Segamat last Friday, Aniq has been busy preparing for the festivities, painting the family house and making traditional delicacies like lemang. He takes pride in being able to make a difference in his family’s life, knowing that his sacrifices in the sport have paid off beyond medals and titles.

Despite the festive celebrations, Aniq remains focused on his career. He recently dropped one kilogram to compete in the men’s 60kg category due to the revised weight class structure by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

His ultimate goal remains the same – to lift a total of 300kg – surpassing his current national record of 298kg in the then men’s 61kg category.

After Raya, Aniq will return to Kuala Lumpur to resume training for the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, which will be held later this year.

“That is my main focus because the championships serve as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games.”

Beyond that, he has set his sights on another milestone, which is the SEA Games in Bangkok.

“Winning the SEA Games crown is my next big goal,” Aniq shared.

For now, Aniq is embracing the joy of giving back, cherishing the rare opportunity to celebrate with his family while reflecting on how far he has come.

His journey from humble beginnings to success is a testament to his dedication, not only to his sport but also to those who have supported him from the very beginning. – March 31, 2025
