KUALA LUMPUR — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has confirmed that former national coach Tan Cheng Hoe will assume the role of technical director for Harimau Malaya.

The 56-year-old Kedahan, who led the national team from 2018 to 2022, is expected to take up the position soon, with an official announcement to be made via FAM’s social media channels.

Speaking to Scoop, FAM deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said Cheng Hoe had been at Wisma FAM over the past week to discuss how his expertise could support the national side, now under newly appointed head coach Peter Cklamovski.

It is also understood that FAM’s current technical director, Scott O’Donell, will transition to a similar role at the Akademi Mokhtar Dahari (AMD) following the reported resignation of Oscar Gonzalez in February this year.

“Yes, Cheng Hoe will be part of the national team set-up. We approached him over the past few days for several (potential) roles, but our primary intention is to appoint him as technical director.

“Personally, I believe this will have a positive impact. Cheng Hoe is a former national head coach, and with our current line-up of foreign coaches, his experience could help strengthen and support the team.

“He could offer valuable insight to assist the coaching staff in refining the national squad more efficiently.

“We are currently awaiting clearance from his current club, Police Tero in Thailand, where he serves as head coach. Once that’s finalised, we will make a formal announcement through our social media platforms,” said Yusoff when contacted.

Before moving abroad, Cheng Hoe managed Selangor FC from 2022 until March last year. – April 15, 2025
