‘Why not?’: Khairy open to MFL role as Super League clubs collapse

Former Youth and Sports minister says Malaysian clubs must evolve financially or risk collapse, offers to help if time permits

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin is open to taking on a role with the Malaysian Football League (MFL) if the body believes his expertise could help stabilise the flailing domestic game.

Khairy, a former deputy president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), expressed concern over the M-League’s worsening condition, with several clubs facing serious financial difficulties.

Perak FC has officially withdrawn from the league, while Sri Pahang FC may follow suit after a proposed takeover by Genting Plantations Berhad fell through.

The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, also recently suggested that Kedah FC could be forced to shut down ahead of the new season — though no official statement has been issued by the club.

Should both Pahang and Kedah withdraw, the Super League would be left with just 10 participating teams.

Speaking to reporters at the Manchester United vs Asean All-Stars press conference today, Khairy voiced his disappointment at clubs’ continued failure to take financial planning seriously.

“The state of Malaysian club football is worrying, and a major overhaul is necessary. Back when I was president of MyTeam FC, which competed in the Super League, we managed to run the club on a budget of RM4 million.

“At that time, the budget was sufficient for us, and it was also the minimum required for clubs across the country to operate. But times have changed, and we must evolve accordingly.

“Some clubs are still operating based on budget plans from 10 to 15 years ago. They must adapt and manage their finances properly, especially now that many state governments are distancing themselves from football responsibilities.”

Khairy pointed to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) as a model of sustainable club management.

“I’m not saying every club has to follow JDT 100%, but they should at least take 50% of their inspiration from them if they wish to remain sustainable. At the same time, both MFL and FAM should collaborate to educate these clubs on the importance of financial sustainability in the league.

“I’m also ready to be part of MFL and offer my expertise to help resolve this issue. I’m more than willing to contribute — if time permits and I don’t have other major commitments… why not?” said Khairy.

It is understood that the MFL’s First Instance Body is currently reviewing the financial records of all participating clubs and will soon issue the final list of teams eligible to compete in the Super League next season. — May 17, 2025
