Tze Yong out of Singapore and Indonesia Opens with knee injury

Ng Tze Yong has been diagnosed with a knee strain following his retirement at the Malaysia Masters and will be sidelined for at least two weeks pending further assessment

KUALA LUMPUR – Ng Tze Yong is set to miss the upcoming Singapore and Indonesia Opens after being diagnosed with a knee strain, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed today.

Tze Yong, 25, was forced to retire midway through his Malaysia Masters opening-round match against Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long yesterday due to discomfort in his right knee.

BAM has now revealed he will be sidelined for at least two weeks pending further assessment, effectively ruling him out of the next two legs of the World Tour in Singapore next week, and Jakarta the week after.

The update seems to offer some relief, though BAM remains cautious, noting that a return date will depend on how Tze Yong responds to treatment.

It is important to note that the Malaysia Masters was only Tze Yong’s fourth tournament this year, after returning from a one-year injury layoff last month.

The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallist is also still competing under his protected world number 18 ranking, which is only applicable for another five months or so.

“Following medical evaluation, he has been diagnosed with a strain to the knee and will be out of action for at least two weeks pending further assessment,” BAM said in a statement.

Tze Yong’s absence is a blow to the national men’s singles depth, as they are once again left with Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh, both of whom did not clear the opening round of the Malaysia Masters yesterday.

Unfortunately, there is nothing much that BAM can do but wish Tze Yong a “smooth and speedy recovery”. – May 22, 2025
