Feels like home: Amorim says Malaysian fans match Old Trafford’s intensity

KUALA LUMPUR – Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has praised Malaysian supporters, saying their passion rivals the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese tactician made the remark after witnessing a massive turnout of Red Devils supporters following the team’s arrival on Malaysian soil yesterday.

It was reported that approximately 200 fans gathered at W Hotel in Kuala Lumpur in hopes of catching a glimpse of their favourite players.

The Europa League runners-up and 15th-placed finishers in this season’s English Premier League are set to face the Asean All Stars in a pre-season friendly at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium tomorrow.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference earlier today, Amorim expressed his delight at the overwhelming support shown for the club despite their troubled campaign.

“The passion from fans in Malaysia is something special, especially after the disastrous season we had.The atmosphere they create reminds me so much of the intensity we feel at Old Trafford,” he said.

“I expect nothing less than the maximum from our fans here. The energy in this stadium – it honestly feels like Old Trafford. And with that comes expectation: to win, to entertain, to perform.”

Amorim emphasised the importance of every game in building momentum and team development, including the one against the Asean All Stars.

“Every match we play is part of a bigger goal – to strengthen the team, to grow, to improve. That’s why every player is here.

That’s why tomorrow’s match against the ASEAN All Stars matters. It’s these kinds of games where we want to show our best,” he added.

Also present at the press conference were United midfielder Mason Mount, Pro-Events Group CEO Julian Kam, Asean Football Federation president Khiev Sameth, and Football Association of Malaysia president Datuk Joehari Ayub.

Meanwhile, Amorim also acknowledged that the friendly match, under the guidance of South Korean coach Kim Sang-sik, will be competitive, and his team will approach it with full intensity.

“It’s going to be a competitive game, and we’ll give everything we’ve got. No holding back.

“I’m expected to field more youngsters and give them more game time so they’re ready for next season.

“Seeing fans turn up in big numbers – that’s the greatest feeling for me as a coach. It’s a huge boost for the players and the whole staff.

“We’re always looking for the best Asian players in the world for next season. If the Asean All Stars deliver on the pitch, rest assured – they’ll be on our radar,” Amorim added.

The 13-time Premier League champions last played in Malaysia during their 2009 pre-season tour, recording back-to-back wins over a Malaysia XI with scorelines of 3-2 and 2-0 at the same Bukit Jalil venue. — May 27, 2025
