KUALA LUMPUR – For Arif Daniel, loyalty to Manchester United runs deep – so deep that even a frustrating season couldn’t stop the 41-year-old from travelling all the way from Nibong Tebal, Penang to Kuala Lumpur to meet his football heroes.

Despite the Red Devils finishing a dismal 15th in the English Premier League last season and missing out on a European spot after losing 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final last week, Arif’s passion for his boyhood club remains unwavering.

Arif, accompanied by his wife Nora Razak, 35, was among the lucky fans who won the adidas ‘Road to United’ competition, earning the chance to meet several United players during a special meet-and-greet session at The Exchange TRX today – ahead of United’s Maybank Challenge Cup clash against the ASEAN All Stars tomorrow at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The players who made time for the meet-and-greet amidst their short but hectic schedule were Manuel Ugarte, Alejandro Garnacho, Harry Amass, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, and star captain Bruno Fernandes.

“I’ve been a United fan since 1991,” said Arif.

“I came here to meet Bruno (Fernandes), but I got to meet Kobbie (Mainoo) and Amad (Diallo). That’s okay.”

Still buzzing from the experience, Arif reflected on United’s struggles this season, and echoed a legendary quote from former manager Sir Alex Ferguson: “Sir Alex once said we need to learn from the past, so that’s what we’ve got to do.”

As for what next season holds, Arif remains cautiously optimistic.

“Will we do better next season? Only time will tell… but slowly lah,” he said with a smile.

Looking ahead to the Maybank Challenge Cup, Arif added, “Yes, I’m excited for it – and for sure I think United are going to win.”

For fans like Arif, supporting United isn’t just about trophies or league positions – it’s about lifelong devotion, unforgettable memories, and the chance, however brief, to stand face to face with the players who represent a club they’ve loved for decades.

After their stop in Kuala Lumpur, Manchester United will head to Hong Kong next as part of their Asian Tour. – May 28, 2025
