KUALA LUMPUR — Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin made clear his intention to contest a seat at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly in South Korea this September.
Megat’s remarks came following an official visit by South Korean Paralympic Committee (KPC) president Jung Jin-owan to the PCM Centre of Excellence in Kampung Pandan today.
“Malaysia has yet to secure representation at the IPC level — only at the Asian level for now. But with Korea’s support, we hope to make our mark on the global stage.
“God willing, I will stand for the election myself,” said Megat.
At present, Malaysia has no representation on either the IPC or the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Megat currently serves as an executive board member of the Asian Paralympic Committee, while Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria is vice-president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
Meanwhile, Jin-owan — a former Paralympic gold medallist in shooting at the 2000 Sydney Games — pledged to deepen collaboration with PCM, including enhanced exchange programmes and efforts to promote greater inclusion across Asia and beyond.
He thanked PCM for the warm welcome and commended the strong media support, noting that such exposure could encourage more individuals with impairments to become active in society.
“I believe media attention like this can inspire those still staying at home to step out and get involved,” said Jin-owan.
“Together with PCM, we will continue working to advance para sports — not only in Asia, but globally.” – June 5, 2025
