KUALA LUMPUR — Kuala Lumpur will host the opening round of the 2025 FIM World Supercross Championship, marking the series’ first-ever race in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Stadium Merdeka will take centre stage on October 18 as the championship begins a five-round campaign that spans five continents, underscoring the growing global reach of supercross under the stewardship of Bia Sports Group.

A total of six rounds will take place across five continents, with subsequent races confirmed in Buenos Aires (8 November), Vancouver (15 November), San Jose (22 November), Gold Coast (29 November), and Cape Town (13 December).

Promoted by local outfit Data Sukan Sdn Bhd, the inclusion of Kuala Lumpur is seen as a significant step in expanding the sport’s reach in Southeast Asia.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the FIM World Supercross Championship to Kuala Lumpur,” said Shamil Yusof, Data Sukan Sdn Bhd chief executive director.

“It’s a testament to Malaysia’s rising status in global sports and we look forward to providing a thrilling experience for fans.”

He added that the race comes at a high point for Malaysian motorsports, with the 2025 Malaysian MotoGP scheduled for the following weekend, creating what he described as “a fantastic double-header for the region”.

The 2025 season is the second under the management of Bia Sports Group and will feature a refreshed brand identity.

A new logo – featuring a curved, globe-inspired design and a stylised “W” referencing Supercross tyres – has been introduced to reflect the sport’s global ambition and rugged character.

“This will be the biggest and best season yet,” said WSX chief executive Tom Burwell.

“Expanding into new regions like Malaysia, Argentina and South Africa, alongside returning to key markets like Canada and Australia, highlights our vision to make supercross a truly global spectacle.”

Antonio Alia Portela, FIM Motocross Commission director, praised the organisers’ efforts to broaden the championship’s international appeal.

“Bia Sports Group is laying the foundations for a bold new era for the FIM World Supercross Championship,” he said.

“They are proving their ambition by taking supercross further across the globe and creating a World Championship for fans in every continent to get excited about.”

The 2024 championship saw victories for Eli Tomac (450cc), Shane McElrath (250cc), and Fire Power Honda (team), but a new season is expected to bring fresh rivalries and title contenders.

Further team and rider announcements will be made in the lead-up to the first race.
