FAM will not dance to anyone’s tune amid Hamidin appointment: Joehari

FAM president said that the honorary title was conferred purely in recognition of Hamidin’s contributions and not as a means to exert influence over current decision-making within the association

KUALA LUMPUR – Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Joehari Mohd Ayob emphasised that his administration will not dance to anyone’s tune.

This was made clear following the official appointment of former FAM president Tan Sri Hamidin Amin as the honorary president during FAM’s first Extraordinary Congress of 2025, which took place today at the Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya.

Prior to Hamidin’s formal appointment, the governing body had received backlash from football fans across the country following the circulation of unverified reports regarding his return.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference, Joehari said that the honorary title was conferred purely in recognition of Hamidin’s contributions and not as a means to exert influence over current decision-making within the association.

“People have to understand that just because we have named Hamidin the honorary president, it doesn’t mean he has full influence or control over our decisions. The title was awarded for his years of service and contributions to the governing body.

“With Hamidin returning to the system, that doesn’t imply we are incapable or lack credibility in carrying out our responsibilities. Each of us was given the mandate based on what we can offer to the national football landscape. We are not here to play politics or dance to anyone’s tune.

“People are free to voice their opinions, but there is no need for certain individuals to create unnecessary chaos over Hamidin’s appointment. Nor should there be assumptions that his role will overshadow mine or that of anyone else in the administration. All of us unanimously accepted the appointment.

“For me, I’m not personally affected by it – this is about doing what’s best for football, and we are all committed to strengthening FAM. We truly believe Hamidin’s return brings added value not only to FAM but to the entire football ecosystem,” said Joehari.

According to FAM, the delegates recognised Hamidin’s immense contributions to Malaysian and international football over the past 30 years. The honorary title reflects his leadership and lasting impact on the sport.

Under FAM’s statutes, the honorary presidency may be awarded to a former FAM president who has rendered distinguished service to the development of football.

While the position does not carry voting rights, it allows the holder to attend FAM congresses, provide strategic input, and represent the association as its official ambassador.

Hamidin, who served as FAM president from 2018 to 2025, becomes only the second individual to receive this honour, following the late Sultan Ahmad Shah in 2014. – June 30, 2025
