KUALA LUMPUR – The local football fraternity is mourning the loss of a legend, as former Penang goalkeeper Firos Mohamed died after collapsing during a veterans match at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium in Perak last night.

The 53-year-old was playing for the Penang legends team in the Dr Zambry Abd Kadir Cup, a four-cornered tournament featuring former players from Penang, Kedah, Perlis and Perak. He collapsed during the match against Kedah at around 10.15pm.

Medical personnel rushed to the pitch to administer emergency aid before Firos was taken to KPJ Manjung Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident stunned teammates and spectators, as Firos had appeared to be playing actively before the collapse, according to BH.

Penang FC confirmed the news and extended condolences to his family in a statement: “The Penang FC Board of Directors and all staff extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of former Penang goalkeeper Firos Mohamed. May Allah shower His blessings upon him and place him among the righteous.”

Firos was a standout figure in Malaysian football in the 1990s, remembered for his performances with the Harimau Kumbang team. He remained active in the football community through charity and legends matches long after retirement.

His remains are expected to be brought back to his family home tonight. Burial details will be announced by his next of kin. – July 6, 2025
