KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur City FC’s new signing Syamer Kutty Abba is aiming high — targeting qualification for the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2) and a strong campaign in the Shopee Cup — while using the opportunity to reignite his career.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who recently joined KL City on loan from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), sees this season as a chance to revive his form and push for a return to the national team.

“Of course, we’re aiming to finish as high as possible. My main target is to help KL qualify for the ACL2 and also challenge for the Shopee Cup,” said Syamer when contacted.

“With the players we have now – many of whom are part of the national team – I think it’s possible. We’ve got a solid squad, and if we remain consistent, we can achieve something special.”

Last season, the Penang-born player featured prominently for Penang FC, where he captained the side and played a key leadership role. While the results were mixed, he believes the experience helped him grow.

“It was the first time in a long while that I played week in, week out, and I really learnt a lot. Even though the season didn’t end well, I took away many positives on a personal level,” he reflected.

Now, at KL City, Syamer is reunited with club legend and former national teammate Paulo Josue, a midfield partnership he is eager to rekindle.

“Paulo is a legend at KL. Sharing the pitch with him again is a privilege. There’s a good understanding between us, and I believe we can help push the team forward this season,” he added.

On his chances of a national team recall under head coach Peter Cklamovski, Syamer remained cautiously optimistic.

“That depends on how well I perform each week. The coach will select the best players in the league. But I’m focused on improving and, hopefully, earning my spot again. The national team has progressed a lot – and it would be a great honour to be part of it again,” he said.

He also spoke about the areas of his game he is working to refine.

“I still need to improve in certain aspects, both with and without the ball – positioning, decision-making, and reading the game better. The coaches here have been very helpful, and I’ve been reviewing my performances to identify areas for growth.”

Though a JDT return remains a long-term goal, Syamer is clear about where his priorities lie.

“I left JDT to get more playing time, especially after a few injury setbacks. Returning one day would be a dream come true. But right now, my goal is to perform consistently and make the most of this opportunity with KL.” – July 8, 2025
