KUALA LUMPUR – The Heritage Ride Taiping 2025 road cycling event is expected to draw up to 2,000 participants, after organisers extended the registration deadline to September 24 following overwhelming demand.
Deputy Education Minister and Taiping MP, Wong Kah Woh, said the second edition of the event will take place on November 30, starting from Dataran Warisan Taiping.
“Registration was initially scheduled to close on August 24, but with 1,700 entries already received – surpassing our original target of 1,500 – we decided to extend it until September 24. We are confident numbers will continue to rise, including from outside Taiping, given the encouraging response so far,” he said at a press conference announcing the event.
Wong added that the Heritage Ride is more than just a sporting event, serving also as a platform to boost Taiping’s tourism industry, promote a wider event ecosystem, and showcase the town’s rich heritage and history.
The ride will feature three categories: a 90km and 60km competitive race, and a 20km Fun Ride, taking participants through areas including Sepetang, Simpang Empat and Kamunting, surrounded by Perak’s natural landscapes.
To encourage youth participation, 200 free slots have been allocated to students aged between seven and 17, thanks to a collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
Taiping was chosen as the venue for its deep historical significance, being home to Malaysia’s first museum, prison, and railway station. Riders will also pass landmarks such as the Esplanade and the iconic Raintree Walk at the 140-year-old Taiping Lake Gardens, making the event a unique blend of sport, history and tourism. – August 22, 2025
