KUALA LUMPUR — National Paralympic star Datuk Abdul Latif Romly has rewritten the record books, breaking his own world mark in the F20 long jump to claim gold at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in India.
The 28-year-old leapt 7.67 metres on his third attempt in New Delhi earlier today, surpassing his previous world record of 7.64m set at the 2018 Asian Championships in Jakarta.
“I am very satisfied with my performance today because I was able to break two records — the championship record (7.61m) and the world record in New Delhi,” Abdul Latif said in a statement released after the event.
The victory continues his reign as one of Malaysia’s most celebrated Paralympic athletes. Abdul Latif, who has already secured multiple Paralympic and world titles, dedicated the medal to his family.
“I dedicate this medal to my wife and children. From now on, I will balance my training and give time to my wife and the baby who will be coming soon,” he said.
Saudi Arabia’s Hassan Dawshi finished second with a jump of 7.36m, while Matvei Iakushev, competing as a Neutral Paralympic Athlete, took bronze with 7.22m.
Abdul Latif first captured global attention at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, where he won gold in the T20 (intellectual disability) long jump with a then-world record leap of 7.60m at just 19 years old.
He defended his title at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics despite competing with an injury, cementing his place as one of Malaysia’s most decorated para athletes. — September 28, 2025
