KUALA LUMPUR – Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria has described his appointment as the inaugural chair of the Ethics Commission of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) as a significant “recognition for our country” that could elevate Malaysia’s standing among Islamic nations.
The appointment, which was effective on October 22, was personally endorsed by ISSA President Prince Abdulaziz Turki Al-Faisal, who is also Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sport and the President of its Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
Speaking to reporters today after thr Olympic Day Run at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Norza said the role presents a valuable opportunity for Malaysia, as a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to play a more prominent part in the international sports landscape.
“I am confident that this is one way for us to contribute to sports at the international level,” he said after flagging off the run this morning.
He added that the prestigious role could pave the way for Malaysia to host the Islamic Solidarity Games in the future, an event he sees as a major opportunity for the nation.
“Yes, of course, because we want that one day, we will not only play a role in the committee but perhaps one day we can become the host for the Games,” Norza said.
The Games, which involve all 57 member nations of the OIC, represent a significant international sporting event with participants from across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
“This is an opportunity for us to get involved more actively,” he added.
Norza was speaking at the Olympic Day Run, which saw an encouraging turnout of over 2,000 participants, including international runners.
He noted that the strong attendance was particularly impressive given that the event coincided with the Asean Summit being held in Kuala Lumpur, which caused significant traffic disruptions.
“The response from sports enthusiasts has been very encouraging,” he said, expressing his gratitude to all who attended.
He also extended his appreciation to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Sharif for attending the event, which was held in collaboration with the National Stadium Corporation (PSM).
During the event, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall was presented with a certificate from the Malaysian Book of Records, commemorating the capital as the first city in the country to host the Olympic Day Run back in 1991.
The annual run is celebrated globally on or around June 23 to promote the values of the Olympic movement. — October 25, 2025
