SEPANG — Newly-crowned Moto3 world champion Jose Antonio Rueda is awake and under observation after being involved in a collision with CIP Green Power rider Noah Dettwiler during the 2025 Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) here today.

According to a statement from Red Bull KTM Ajo, the 19-year-old Rueda, who is receiving treatment at a local hospital, suffered a fracture to his hand and a severe concussion, but did not sustain any serious injuries to his head or torso.

“He remains under observation and is awaiting further tests on his hand and arm,” it said.

Earlier, the collision occurred during the sighting lap, which riders undertake from the pit lane to the starting grid to get their positions approximately 20 minutes before the start of the main race.

The crash, which happened after Turn 3 – just moments before the main race was scheduled to begin at 12 noon – resulted in an almost two-hour delay.

The collision also prompted race officials to wave the red flag.

According to the race medical director, both Rueda and Dettwiler were conscious following the crash and were airlifted to a local hospital for further treatment.

As a result of the incident, the Moto3 race was shortened from 15 laps to 10 laps.

The race was later won by Honda Team Asia rider Taiyo Furusato, who secured his maiden Moto3 victory since making his debut in the 2022 season. — October 26, 2025
